What is Yunnan Baiyao?

Yunnan Baiyao is a herbal formulation that was created in 1902 by the illustrious Chinese physician Qu Huanzhang. Its name literally means “white medicine from Yunnan” after its birthplace, a province famed for its pristine environment and abundance of precious natural herbs. Yunnan is the only province in China that contains seven diverse climate zones within its borders, which allow for an unparalleled variety of high quality herbs with potent medicinal properties to flourish.

While the exact formula of Yunnan Baiyao is classified as a Class-1 state secret in China, it is well known that its active ingredients are derived from herbs grown in Yunnan.

Yunnan Baiyao is available in both capsule and powder form. It can be applied externally to wounds to staunch bleeding, or ingested to aid in healing, swelling and it also works as an analgesic (painkiller). Yunnan Baiyao found fame outside of China when American G.I.s discovered that the Vietcong were using it to staunch bleeding during the Vietnam War.

Today, Yunnan Baiyao continues to be used in trauma care to stop bleeding and improve circulation in traumatic injuries. Already commonly utilised by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners, Yunnan Baiyao has also been used in the Western context. Multiple studies and clinical trials have shown that Yunnan Baiyao is helpful in controlling bleeding and reducing the risk of haemorrhage recurrence.
